Hiryu, together with Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu, formed the First Air Fleet and saw extensive action in various operations. During the Battle of Midway, Hiryu was nearly rendered unable to navigate, but continued fighting even after becoming the last remaining carrier.

The model recreates the distinctive features of Hiryu, including the well-balanced arrangement of anti-aircraft guns and machine guns, the relatively large bridge in proportion to the hull, and the high bow sides.
It also recreates the bridge positioned from the forward starboard side to the center port side, a major difference from its related carrier Soryu.
