Gunbuster (Aim for the Top!)

Gunbuster (Aim for the Top!)

Ahh, it’s that time of year when the spring anime season is just kicking off, and I’m so excited I can hardly sit still—but the episodes are taking forever to air! What am I supposed to do with all this hype energy? 😭🌸📺 Instead of stressing out, I decided to go back and revisit a classic this week—Gunbuster!

Even though it came out in 1988, it’s one of those legendary robot anime series that still gets talked about today. Sure, there are a bunch of moments where you’re like, “Wait, what!?” 😂 But that’s part of the charm, especially if you're into old-school anime.

It was directed by Hideaki Anno, the same genius behind Evangelion, and the script was written by Toshio Okada—these days you’re more likely to see Toshio Okada on YouTube than behind the scenes. And the cast? Absolute legends. Noriko Hidaka, who was everywhere in Japan back then, plays the lead. Plus, Akio Otsuka as the coach—before he fully leaned into his now-iconic style. It’s actually kinda rare to hear him like that!

Also, did you know the final episode, episode 6, is in black and white? That kind of bold, “take-it-or-leave-it” directorial decision just screams Anno 😂

Anyway, if you haven’t seen it yet and you’re into anime history, it’s definitely worth your time! 🤖✨
